The Senators are affiliated to a range of political groups, according to their convictions. A group must be composed of at least 10 members. Each group designates its own candidates for membership of the Senate's Managing Committee and of the standing committees and adopts a position on bills brought before the House. The chairmen of the political groups are endowed with a range of powers over the conduct of debates. They are members of the Conference of Presidents which draws up the Senate's agenda. During sittings, they may call for a public vote or an adjournment.
Each Political Group has an office at the Senate and recruits its own secretariat.
